Do you love movies? Do you love talking about movies? Do you love analyzing the feminist themes—or lack thereof—of movies? If you’re in Brooklyn, New York on Thursday, July 19th, we have an event that might be up your pop cultural alley. Tor Books is partnering with The Mary Sue to present the Feminist Film Forum!
Princess Weekes, Assistant Editor of The Mary Sue, will show clips from great (and not so great) films and comment on them with a feminist lens. The clips will come from a wide range of comedy, drama, and science fiction and fantasy—everything from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Mad Max: Fury Road. Plus, the discussion will be spiked by one of host cinema Videology’s specialty cocktails, and Tor will be giving away free tote bags with a select #FearlessWoman book!
The #FearlessWomen campaign is an initiative by Tor Books to highlight female characters and authors who are “creating new blockbuster worlds and re-shaping our own.” You can follow the campaign across Tor Books’ Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram through #FearlessWomen, #FearlessSF and #FearlessFantasy.
The Mary Sue is one of the premiere hubs of geek culture, pop cultural criticism, and feminism, focusing on geek culture, comic book movies, genre television, space exploration, emerging technologies, and video games. They “celebrate diversity and women’s representation in all of these areas (and more!) and work to make geekdom safe and open for everyone.”
Feminist Film Forum will unleash its commentary at Videology Bar and Cinema, Thursday, July 19th at 6:45 pm. You can get your tickets (and research cocktail options) here!
